PRECIOUS STAIN

A Southern Paean

A story of family, memory, survival, and the enduring power of love.

Some family stories are easy to tell.

Others ask us to look directly at the complicated places where love and pain, strength and vulnerability, memory and silence exist side by side.

Precious Stain: A Southern Paean is a deeply personal collection of family memories rooted in southeastern Georgia and centered on the descendants of Eunice Bowen Lanier and James Corbett Lanier.

Although these stories belong to one family, their echoes reach much further. They explore experiences of hardship, resilience, complicated relationships, generational wounds, loss, and the ways people continue to love despite everything they have endured.

A family story. A Southern story. A story about what survives.

“Within these stories, there are echoes of shared experience that will resonate with anyone who has loved and fought and lived to tell about it.”

About the Book

Precious Stain: A Paean

Precious Stain: A Southern Paean brings together generations of family memories, beginning with Eunice Bowen Lanier and James Corbett Lanier and following the lives, relationships, struggles, and descendants that came after them.

The story moves through decades of change, introducing the people whose lives became part of this family’s continuing history.

At its heart is a question that reaches beyond genealogy:

What do we inherit from the people who came before us—and what can we transform?

The book does not present a simple family portrait. It remembers people in their complexity: their mistakes, their wounds, their humor, their courage, their relationships, their losses, and their capacity for love.

As the generations unfold, the family story becomes a reflection on the human experience itself.

The author’s preface describes the work as a collection of family memories specific to the descendants of Eunice and Corbett, while recognizing that within those memories are experiences that can resonate with anyone who has loved, struggled, survived, and continued living.

Meet the Author

Miriam Belen

Miriam Belen is the author of Precious Stain: A Southern Paean, a family-centered work that preserves memories from generations of the Lanier family.

Through these stories, she brings together people, places, relationships, and experiences that might otherwise disappear with time.

Rather than presenting family history as a list of names and dates, Belen tells it through lived experience—through the personalities, conflicts, joys, tragedies, and relationships that make a family history human.

Precious Stain: A Southern Paean is an act of remembrance: a way of preserving the voices and experiences of one family while recognizing the universal emotions contained within them.
